Preschool Math Concepts - Measurement

It's Wednesday, and here at Preschool Ponderings, that means time to focus on the standards.  Every Wednesday I choose an Early Learning Standard and share a number of activities that can be aligned with that particular standard.  Remember, the Standards that I use every day, and am most comfortable with are Ohio's Early Learning Development Standards - you can review them here, however I've found that even if your State's standards differ, many of these activities can still be aligned similarly. I've rounded up some great ideas today!

Domain: Mathematics
Strand: Measurement and Data
Topic: Describe and Compare Measurable Attributes

This particular math standard covers three concepts related to size.  First, children should be able to use descriptive words to compare the size of two or more objects. Second, Children should be able to put multiple objects in order according to size.  Finally, children should be able to measure objects using non-standard units of measure.  Her are some ideas for helping children practice all of these concepts;

Sticky size sorting - idea from I Can Teach My Child

Line up common classroom objects by size - idea from Totally Tots

Collect and sort different sized balls - idea from Kindergarten Kindergarten

Sort and order natural materials - idea from Green Grubs Garden Club

Trace and measure your feet using different objects - idea from Mrs. T's First Grade Class

Set up a measurement center with different objects to measure with - idea from Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits

Make Bean rulers - idea from Pocket of Preschool

Those ideas will get you started, I'd love to hear what other objects your students enjoy measuring with!
